About Talk Thairapy
Talk Thairapy originated in 2016 as a peer-directed national organization that empowered barbers and barbershop patrons to speak honestly and candidly about mental health and wellness, to educate others, and encourage people to seek necessary medical help and preventative services.
Talk Thairapy in its haste to grow and meet the everchanging needs of the community held on to the structure of Atlanta based Cut Hypertension initiative, which focused on reducing the prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension in the community. With this structure in mind, Talk Thairapy developed a robust mental health curriculum that included regular blood pressure and depression screenings, mental health first-aid training, and mental health forums to reduce health disparities. Talk Thairapy continues the Cut Hypertension mission of engaging health professions students from across disciplines in service and education.
In 2019, Talk Thairapy expanded into a mental health collective that uses a a one-for-one business model that provides affordable mental health services while simultaneously bringing dignity through free haircuts and professional hair care services to boys in Southwest Atlanta.
